Back to Dixie
In not-too-distant future America’s leaders, driven by power and fueled by hate, introduce a series of laws that strip away human and civil rights from Black and poor people. Their plot culminates when the National Workfare Act is signed into law in 2029.
Under the guise of Workfare job training, government contractors round up millions of the nation’s Black and poor, taking them from their homes and housing them in overcrowded armories and stadiums. The luckier ones are assigned to work for private companies after months of reconditioning. They are wards of the government, and are forced to work long hours, often in inhumane conditions. However, they don’t work for pay—they work only to survive.
Back to Dixie begins with a compassionate government committed to address systemic racism and racial equity issues by passing the SCALE Act in 2023. It will be one of the most positively impactful laws for Black people since the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Progress, though, comes to an abrupt halt when the political pendulum dramatically swings and an ultra-conservative southerner, Senator Willie Earl, is elected president in 2028. He signs the Workfare Act shortly after. The lines of conflict are defined between those that support and benefit from the program and those whose lives are destroyed by it. The main characters navigate their way through grave obstacles, in an attempt to find a way to be free again.
