The book chronicles 15 people's emotional journeys with cancer (either as patient, caregiver, professional, survivor, loved one, etc.) and frames those journeys in light of the participants varied traumas encountered in life. The book sheds light on the true depths behind the idea that we never know what people are going through, or have gone through. Armed with a little more insight into the true depth of emotion that accompanies trauma, we then might be better armed to begin the hard conversations around the emotional aspects of the cancer experience. Each story is contained in its own chapter, and in between each chapter is a brief narrative of my 4,700 mile solo bike ride, in which I visited many of the book participants for the first time, met many people with very interesting stories along the way, and also dealt with the emotional issues surrounding losing my only sibling to brain cancer years prior.
